Sarawak Energy continuously advocate sustainable hydropower development by embedding international best practices in its projects and operations by addressing all aspects of technical, economic, social and environmental sustainability, based on the context and purpose of the projects. To achieve this, we adopt & implement an internationally recognised Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol (HSAP).
In 2014, Sarawak Energy established the HSAP Internal Assessment Team as a catalyst in ensuring sustainability practices are implemented accordingly. This cross-functional team comprises of members from various departments, having direct or indirect involvement in hydropower projects development and operations.
The objectives of the establishment of the HSAP Internal Assessment Team are:
- To be the champions in their respective departments/divisions and ensuring the continuity of embedding sustainability practices in Sarawak Energy’s Business Processes, including non-hydro projects and operations
- To carry out internal assessments using the Protocol; and
- To build internal capacity in preparation for an official assessment

Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol (HSAP) covers the technical, environmental, social, financial & economic, governance and integrative aspects of hydropower projects and operations. By advocating and embedding these best practices into our hydropower projects and business processes contributes to identifying risks and opportunities, development of action plans for continuous improvements, meeting international best practices and capacity development. These key outcomes are directly linked to the company’s strategic objective in building an agile and performance driven organization.
Thus, the contributions of the Internal Assessment Team are aligned with Sarawak Energy’s Key Focus Areas:
- The willingness and capability of internal assessors to work across functional and organizational boundaries, highly driven by teamwork and delivering results. Harnessing and leveraging technical expertise and experience of the Internal Assessment Team that coming from various backgrounds and departments.
- The Internal Assessment Team provides a platform for staff to experience and deliver outcomes through integrated and holistic approach with a global mindset, at the same time being agile, creative and innovative. Thus, delivering talent for a sustainable and profitable business growth.
- The internal assessments identify action plans for continuous improvements and strengthens environmental, safety, security and welfare requirements in projects and operations.
- Providing skilled competent workforce with global mindset and work culture in line with the international sustainability standards and complementing Hydro’s action plan on Generation Academy.
- Internal assessments at operation stage will also identify action plans for continuous improvements aligned with the international best practices in relation to system improvement.
- Development of new approach and improvements that promote front-end loading mindset & assessment in the hydropower development processes and management (e.g. supply chain risks & management, stakeholder’s management etc.) contribute to timely completion of projects.
CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT PLAN FOR INTERNAL ASSESSORS
Sarawak Energy has developed a capacity development plan to ensure continuity and to enhance the internal assessor’s capability and competency. The development plan includes audit trainings, training on the Protocol and workshops.

ADRIEN ROBERT MURAT IMSUL
ADRIEN is a Civil Engineer graduated with a Degree in Civil Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Malaysia. He has worked in various companies before joining Sarawak Energy Berhad in 2012. He is a Civil Engineer for the Hydropower Division, under the Project Delivery Department. His experience includes civil constructions, mainly on buildings, bridges and infrastructure works. He is also part of the internal assessor team for the assessment of IHA protocol. He is currently involved in the civil works for the construction of a 1285 MW hydropower plant.
AZRUL HISHAM HAJON
Azrul is an executive in Sarawak Energy responsible for developing contract strategy for best commercial delivery, sustainable and meeting corporate outcomes for enhancing local content in procurement. He holds a BSc Civil Engineering from University of Technology, Malaysia. Previously has 7 years of experience in the preparation stage of hydropower projects and executing transmission substation projects as a civil engineer. Have a thorough understanding in project’s commercial, financial and technical issues to drive decision in project progression. Familiar with feasibility study, project planning, project budgeting, resource planning, risk matrix identification, tender management, tender evaluation, contract management, business acumen and negotiation.
DARYLYNN CHUNG YIU LI
Darylynn is a Senior Executive at the Sustainability Division of Sarawak Energy. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Malaysia. Darylynn is currently involved in developing sustainability strategies and embedding standards particularly in hydropower projects and operations. She was also involved in developing environmental policy, procedures and guidelines in ensuring the Company’s operations are in compliance with local legal requirements and best practices. She was also involved in studies on GHG from tropical hydropower reservoirs in accordance with the UNESCO/IHA GHG Measurement Guidelines for Freshwater Reservoirs.
DAYANG ZANARIAH ABANG KASHIM
Dayang Zanariah graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree (Hons) in Civil and Structural Engineering as well as a Master of Science Degree in Engineering from the University of Leeds, UK. As a civil engineer, Dayang Zanariah is currently working with the hydropower division under the Project Delivery Department. Her working experience in hydropower ranges from the initial planning, pre-engineering design stage, and current involvement in the construction supervision of the Diversion Tunnels package of a 1285 MW mega hydropower project.
GEORGIA CHIN CHIEW YEH
Georgia is a civil engineer for Sarawak Energy Berhad, based in Sarawak, Malaysia. Her responsibilities are to develop and implement Best Practices for the Projects Department as the Project Management Office with the aim of achieving consistency and standardization of project management processes. She holds a Master’s Degree in Corporate Business Administration from University Malaysia Sarawak and a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Swinburne University.
KAREN LEE SUAN PING
Karen is an Assistant Manager in the Research & Development Department of Sarawak Energy Berhad. She holds a B.Eng. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Malaya in Malaysia. She started her career in Sarawak Energy since 2007, in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) section working on EIAs, Environmental Management Plans and Environmental Monitoring Reports for thermal and hydropower projects.
MOHD. FIRDAUS IBRAHIM
Firdaus graduated in the Bachelor’s Degree of Civil Engineering and Corporate Masters in Business Administration from the University Malaysia Sarawak, Malaysia. He is a part of the project management team for the construction of a 10 MW HEP and is in charge of the quality control and assurance of one of the project work packages. His experience includes involvement in different phases of hydropower progress, such as planning, tender design, as well as feasibility studies for other hydropower projects.
MOHAMAD IRWAN AMAN
Irwan is a Senior Manager for Sarawak Energy Berhad. His main responsibility is to develop and implement sustainability strategies that reflect Sarawak Energy’s values and supports the long-term business plans. He holds a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering and MBA in Finance and has 21 years of work experience in research & development, environmental impacts assessment, feasibility study, project financing, due diligent, and audit in energy and financing sector.
MOHAMMAD ERWAN EZARUDDYN MAHMUD
Erwan is an Executive for Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Division for Sarawak Energy Berhad. His main responsibility is to lead and assist Environmental Assessment Impact (EIA) Internal Environmental Compliance Audit team (Construction Phase Project) for Sarawak Energy and to manage, develop, maintain, support and coordinate environmental and sustainable development initiatives already underway in line with the SEB’s strategic objectives and priorities. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Applied Science Operation Research and has 9 years of working experience in EIA. He is also a Malaysian Certified Inspector of Sediment and Erosion Control (CISEC) Certification, Certified Erosion, Sediment, & Stormwater Inspectors (CESSWI), Certified Environment Officer, and Certified Environmental Professional in Scheduled Waste Management (CePSWaM).
ZAIMIE HAJI ZAINAL ABIDIN
Zaimie holds a position of Sustainability Executive (Reporting & Analysis) and his main role is to assist in the development of Sarawak Energy’s Sustainability Report, monitoring data governance and system as well as its disclosures. He is also involved in executing other sustainability initiatives and assisting to embed sustainability good practices in the business operation. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree (Hons) in Chemistry (Forensic Analysis) from the MARA University of Technology and MBA in Communication & Public Relations from the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology.
